Bourbon Fall

Invented by a dear friend.

2 oz bourbon
1 oz lemon juice
1/3 oz maple syrup
4-5 drops cardamom bitters

Combine in a shaker with ice. Serve in an old fashioned glass.

(alternates: lime juice, or agave)

wrong direction

A friend suggested that since I often get slightly mixed up while driving that I should create a cocktail called the Wrong Direction.
This drink is sweet at the start with a pleasantly dry bitter aftertaste. Just like going the wrong direction.

1 oz bourbon
1 oz brandy
8 dashes chocolate bitters
5 dashes celery bitters

combine in an old fashioned glass. fill with ice and stir.

The Spice Melange

A friend asked for a drink reminiscent of Dune….

2 oz bourbon
½ oz rosemary syrup
8 drops cardamom bitters
4 drops chocolate bitters

combine in a shaker over ice, strain into an old fashioned glass filled with ice.

bold manhattan

I had this one in a surprising retro bar. The bartender used Jim Beam Devil’s Cut, but any quality bourbon suffices. It’s a very uncomplicated yet delicious drink.

2 oz bourbon
¾ oz agave syrup
3 dashes chocolate bitters (or more to taste)

combine in a cocktail shaker over ice.

bourbon word

The Last Word is one of my favorites. I wondered how bourbon would change the drink. This is the delicious result.

1 oz bourbon
1 oz luxardo maraschino
1 oz chartreuse
1 oz lemon juice

combine in shaker over ice, strain into cocktail glass.

vavilov affair

1 oz calvados (apple brandy)
1 oz bourbon
1 tsp sugar
2 dashes angostura bitters
slice of tart apple, juiced

combine in shaker over ice, strain into cocktail glass. garnish with another slice of granny smith apple

midnight water

2 oz bourbon
¾ oz campari
½ oz simple syrup
dash of peychaud’s bitters

combine in shaker over ice, strain into cocktail glass.

sealback

Based on the Seelbach, a classic cocktail from the namesake Louisville bar, discovered nearly simultaneously in Mother Jones and in a book on bitters. My version eliminates the extraneous champagne, which simply waters down the drink.

2 oz bourbon
1 oz Cointreau or triple sec
7 dashes Angostura bitters
7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters

Combine all ingredients in shaker over ice, and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Or, you can try the original Seelbach:

1 oz bourbon
½ oz Cointreau or triple sec
7 dashes Angostura bitters
7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
Chilled champagne or sparkling wine

modern fashion

A classic example of a simplified cocktail. A quick pour of bourbon, a splash of luxardo, drop in a few ice cubes, and you’re ready to relax. This is a fresh, simple take on the old fashioned from The Back Door at Roxy’s.

2 oz bourbon or whiskey
¼ oz luxardo maraschino
orange peel
cherry

Combine in shaker over ice, and strain into cocktail glass. Spritz orange peel over glass. Garnish with cherry.

bourbon crusta

Two options for this one. The first is simple, and fruity. The second is more citrusy and complex.

Option #1
1 ½ oz bourbon
½ oz triple sec or curacao
¼ oz luxardo maraschino
¼ lemon juice

Option #2
2 oz bourbon
½ oz triple sec
½ oz lemon juice
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 drop cardamom bitters

Combine in a shaker over ice, and strain into a cocktail glass.

fallen guru

Inspired by a friend’s brush with a cultish guru.

2 oz bourbon or whiskey
2 oz chai with milk

Combine over ice in an old fashioned glass.

Recommendation:
1 oz Morning Glory Chai (or other spicy and not sweet chai)
1 oz vanilla soy milk

naughty sweet tea (mint julep)

While most recipes will require you to muddle the mint, this is much smoother, and very drinkable.

3 oz bourbon
¾ oz mint syrup

Combine in a collins glass. Stir. Fill completely with ice.

old fashioned

My slightly fruitier (I would say, improved) take on the old fashioned.

1½ oz bourbon or whiskey
1 tsp sugar
4 drops angostura bitters
slice of orange
2 maraschino cherries

In an old fashioned glass, muddle the sugar, orange slice, and one cherry. Add bourbon and ice. Stir, and garnish with a cherry.

fancy-free

A sweeter view of the old fashioned. Similar to The Modern.

2 oz bourbon or whiskey
¼ oz luxardo maraschino
1 dash orange bitters
1 dash angostura bitters
orange peel
cherry

Combine in shaker over ice, and strain into cocktail glass. Spritz orange peel over glass. Garnish with cherry.
